Decide what a scene should feel like, then choose details that fit. A precise sound or small action can do more work than adding a long list of unrelated adjectives.

Worked example

To suggest a quiet room, 'The clock ticked between soft footsteps' fits better than 'The crowd roared.' Both are specific, but they build different moods.
