Graphic choices can change the impression of data. In these bar-chart briefs, bar length represents magnitude from a zero baseline and labels supply units and scope. Artistic styling must not silently change the quantitative meaning. Other chart types can have different conventions.

Worked example

For values 10 and 20, bars measured from the same zero baseline should have a 1:2 length ratio. Decorative area is a different encoding.

Two bars share a zero baseline and a linear scale. The bar for twenty has twice the length of the bar for ten. Labels and a declared scale preserve the data meaning.
