Learn the skill

In this paper layout model, a required inset margin is measured inward from each trim edge. Usable width equals trim width minus the left and right inset. Actual printers have their own specifications; this exercise is not a universal production rule.

Worked example

A 160 mm trimmed page with 8 mm inset on each side has 144 mm of safe width.

An outer trim rectangle has stated width 160 mm. A smaller inner safe-area rectangle is inset 8 mm on each side, leaving 144 mm of safe width. This is a labeled model, not a universal print specification.

Question 1 Print model 1: trim width 150 mm; left and right safe insets 5 mm each. What safe width remains?
Question 2 Print model 2: trim width 160 mm; left and right safe insets 6 mm each. What safe width remains?
Question 3 Print model 3: trim width 170 mm; left and right safe insets 7 mm each. What safe width remains?
Question 4 Print model 4: trim width 180 mm; left and right safe insets 8 mm each. What safe width remains?
Question 5 Print model 5: trim width 190 mm; left and right safe insets 5 mm each. What safe width remains?

Make It Your Own

Optional theme: a surprising delivery. Sketch a page with separate trim and safe-area outlines. Use stated model measurements and place important text inside the safe area. Label any background intended to extend beyond trim. You may draw, write or tell your idea. Use invented characters and places; no personal information or upload is needed. This activity is not scored.

Reflect on your choices

  • Keep trim, safe inset and optional bleed conceptually separate.
  • Explain one intentional choice and one possible alternative.
  • There is no required style or single correct creative response.
