In these ideal flat designs, positive and negative regions cover the whole frame without overlap or gaps. Negative area equals total frame area minus positive area. Numerical area alone does not decide whether a composition succeeds.

Worked example

A 120-square-unit frame with 45 units of subject area leaves 75 units of negative space.

A rectangular frame of 120 square units is partitioned into positive area 45 and negative area 75. The pieces do not overlap and together cover the whole frame; the proportions are shown consistently.
