A reflected mark is the same horizontal distance on the other side of the mirror line. These drawings use a numbered horizontal grid with mirror line x = 10. This is a symmetry model, not a rule that art must be symmetrical.

Worked example

A mark at x = 7 is 3 units left of x = 10. Its reflection is x = 13, three units right.

A horizontal axis from zero to twenty has a vertical mirror line at x equals ten. Points at seven and thirteen lie three units to either side, so they are reflections.

Question 1 Sketch 1: mirror line x = 10, original mark x = 1. What x-coordinate holds its reflection?
Question 2 Sketch 2: mirror line x = 10, original mark x = 2. What x-coordinate holds its reflection?
Question 3 Sketch 3: mirror line x = 10, original mark x = 3. What x-coordinate holds its reflection?
Question 4 Sketch 4: mirror line x = 10, original mark x = 4. What x-coordinate holds its reflection?
Question 5 Sketch 5: mirror line x = 10, original mark x = 5. What x-coordinate holds its reflection?

Make It Your Own

Optional theme: a surprising delivery. Design a symmetrical symbol on a grid. Mark the mirror line and check two matching distances. Then try an intentionally asymmetrical variation. You may draw, write or tell your idea. Use invented characters and places; no personal information or upload is needed. This activity is not scored.

Reflect on your choices

  • Measure equal distances on opposite sides of the mirror line.
  • Explain one intentional choice and one possible alternative.
  • There is no required style or single correct creative response.
