Find the repeating unit before counting decorations. A border made of complete repeats has repeats multiplied by pieces per repeat. This counts the plan; there is no required style for the finished border.

Worked example

A unit of dot, dash, dot has 3 marks. Four complete repeats contain 12 marks.
